If your home has an old style Fuse Board or consumer Unit installed before 2008 it is unlikely it will comply with the current 17th edition of the Wiring regulations BS7671 and may not meet current safety standards. You may wish to replace a old fuse board for your own peace of mind or alternatively it make need replacing so that additions and alterations can be made to other parts of the electrical installation.
Benefits of the modern Consumer Units that Andy installs include they are all switch operated, so you do not need to keep a stock of replacement fuse wire or fuses and the devices can be reset without having to use wire cutters and, or a screwdriver. The Consumer Units are made of self extinguishing plastic and can withstand a higher short circuit than the older wooden Fuse Boards and repairable fuses meaning they are less of a fire risk, also as they are insulated, unlike the old metal fuse Boards, there is a reduced risk of electric shock from contact with them. Installed within the Consumer Units are RCDs giving supplementary protection from electric shock for when as an example you are using an electric Lawn Mower, unlike plug in RCD adaptors these are always connected for your safety and cannot be lost, stolen or borrowed. The 17th edition Wiring regulations require RCD protection for all plug sockets, all electrical circuits and equipment in Bathrooms, all cables concealed in walls less than 50 mm from the surface without mechanical protection along with other RCD requirements, meaning that without the addition of RCDs to older electrical installations they cannot be altered or extended in some circumstances, such as when replacing a Kitchen, Bathroom or adding a Socket or switch, In these circumstances a new Consumer Unit is the best solution for providing RCDs when other electrical work is being undertaken.
So if you are considering or feel there may be a need to have your old fashioned Fuse Board replaced with a modern Consumer Unit to the current 17th edition Electrical regulations, possibly along with the upgrading of the Earthing system, to improve the electrical safety within your home and give added convenience, along with an overall electrical safety check and all the certification you need if you planning to sell, let, extend or alter your home, contact Andy Betteridge.
